Chih's .sol Tutorial

Okay, a lot of people have been asking about .sol's lately. I hope this will simplify things a bit. This is written for windows xp, but hopefully the idea of it would work with other systems. Note that if you are only a guest on the computer your tracks are on, you may not be able to do some of these things.

When you download a .sol, it asks you what you want to do with it. Save it to the desktop for now. If the link you click brings up a screen with a bunch of gibberish, you have to right-click the link, 'Save Target as...', and then save to the desktop. You can name it anything for the moment, as long as it's still a .sol

Now, the 'figure out where to put it...' part of the tut. First, do a search: All files and folders, name 'savedLines.sol' (exactly), click 'More advanced options', and make sure the first three options are checked. The 'hidden folders' is the most important one. It should look like this:

And... your search should come up with at least one file:

Now, if you have a bunch of different .sol's, and you want to know which one is the right one for the website you use (because the .sol you are trying to look at has to go into the same folder as your 'active' track), you can look at the sizes of the files. if it's blank or nearly blank, it should be under 5kb. If you had one good size track on your save, it could be 20-150kb. A file with lots of saves in it could be over 800kb. I have one that is 2.37mb. You can probably narrow down the list to one or two files. Don't hesitate to copy the .sol you downloaded into each folder, just in case. You would right-click, 'Open Containing Folder'... just make sure they aren't both named savedLines, you have to rename one.

and mine looks like...

Notice how many files I have in there. The only active file is named savedLines (which happens to be Line Raider 2). The rest are there for me to keep track of, or record.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO DELETE YOUR .SOL TO LOOK AT SOMEONE ELSE'S TRACK!! Just rename it. I would even suggest taking all of the files from the search, adding a letter or number to the end of each name, and copying them to your main folder. These files are microscopic in comparison to mp3's and other media, so you can have hundreds of .sol's in your folder, and it will not take up very much room on your computer. My folder worth of .sol's is the same amount of data as one mp3.

Now, this is important, and it can't be said enough. DO NOT RUN LINERIDER WHILE YOU ARE TINKERING WITH THE .SOL's, on the internet or standalone. You will lose or corrupt your file. If you've been looking at other tracks, and lost yours, this is why.

To switch files, just rename the active file, then rename the one you want to view as savedLines.

You can't merge .sol's, as far as I know, but you can 'split' them. Make a copy of the one that has the track(s) you want to single out, switch it to active (see above), and delete the unwanted tracks.

If you want to share your tracks, you can post up to a 195kb .sol attachment here. If it's larger than that, either split the track(s) you want to share, or use a file upload site. I use mediafire, but most sites will work. Again, if you can get the .sol size below 195kb, you can post it as an attachment here, without having to worry about a file site. Of course when I say 'here', I mean the .sol exchange.

I (or a mod/admin) will edit in any questions that still need to be answered. Hope this helps.

Hey, How do you post .Sols on here? I have it up but how do I get it into the format so someone can see it and open it on this website?

Upload it to medaifire.com, no registration is needed.

I can get to the point where I find the sol file but it won't open and I can't see the individual files in it.

You can only open savedLines with Line Rider; it's not an individually openable file. Just paste savedLines into the linerider.com folder, and you can open the tracks with Line Rider.
